Custodial wallet

A wallet where a third party such as an exchange holds your private keys and controls the assets on your behalf.

In a custodial wallet a third party, typically a centralised exchange or brokerage, holds the private keys that control your cryptocurrency. You interact with an account balance through a login, much like online banking, while the provider actually signs transactions on the blockchain. Convenience is the main appeal: password recovery, customer support, and simple interfaces lower the barrier for newcomers.

Why it matters

Because the custodian controls the keys, you rely on its solvency, security, and honesty. If it is hacked, freezes withdrawals, or becomes insolvent, your access can vanish even though the blockchain itself is working normally. This is the meaning behind the phrase not your keys, not your coins. Custodial services are also subject to regulation, including identity checks and the ability to freeze accounts under legal orders. For many users the convenience and recovery options are a reasonable trade, provided they choose reputable, well-regulated providers and avoid keeping large balances they do not need for active trading on any single platform.

Common misunderstanding

A balance shown in an exchange app is often mistaken for coins you directly control on-chain. In a custodial arrangement it is a claim against the provider, not self-held cryptocurrency. Withdrawing to a wallet whose keys you hold is what converts that claim into assets you actually control. Until then, the provider stands between you and the blockchain, and its problems, whether a hack, an insolvency, or a freeze, quickly become your problems.
