A decentralised application, or dApp, is an application whose core logic runs on a blockchain through smart contracts, rather than on servers a single company controls. Users typically interact through a familiar web or mobile interface and connect a self-custody wallet to sign transactions. The front end may be hosted conventionally, but the rules that move funds or data are enforced on-chain, where they are transparent and cannot be quietly changed.

Why it matters

Because the backend logic is public and runs without a central operator, dApps can offer censorship resistance and transparency that traditional apps cannot. That also shifts responsibility onto users, who must verify each transaction they sign, since there is often no support desk or reversal. Risk can hide in the smart contracts, in the token being traded, or in a compromised or fake front end that requests malicious approvals. Because the interface and the on-chain logic are separate, a genuine protocol can be impersonated by a lookalike site, so confirming the correct address and reading each signing prompt carefully is essential.

Common misunderstanding

Being decentralised is frequently equated with being safe or fully trustless. Many dApps still rely on centralised components such as hosted interfaces or admin keys, and their smart contracts can contain bugs. Connecting a wallet is low risk, but signing a transaction or granting a token approval is where funds can actually be lost, so the signing prompt, not the act of connecting, deserves the closest attention.
