Private key
Definition
A private key is the secret number that authorises spending from a crypto address; anyone who holds it controls the funds.
A private key is a very large, randomly generated number. Wallet software uses it to produce digital signatures that prove you authorise a transaction, without ever revealing the key itself. The matching public key and address are derived from it one way, so an address can be shared freely while the private key stays hidden.
Why it matters
In most blockchains there is no password reset and no support desk that can reverse a transfer. Control of the private key is control of the funds, full stop. If someone copies it, they can drain the account; if you lose it with no backup, the funds are unreachable. This is the meaning behind the phrase “not your keys, not your coins”: assets on an exchange are controlled by the exchange’s keys, not yours.
Common misunderstanding
People often think coins are “stored in” a wallet the way files sit on a USB stick. They are not. Balances live on the blockchain; the wallet only stores keys. A private key is also different from a seed phrase and from a wallet password. The seed phrase can regenerate many private keys; the password only unlocks the local app. Because of this, a private key or seed phrase must never be typed into a website, pasted into a chat, or entered into a form, no matter how official the request looks. Legitimate wallets and support staff never ask for it, and no genuine recovery process ever requires you to reveal or upload it.
