Definition
A seed phrase is a list of ordinary words that backs up a wallet and can regenerate every private key it controls.
A seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic, is a human-readable backup of a wallet. Under the widely used BIP-39 standard, the phrase is typically 12 or 24 words drawn from a fixed list of 2048 words. From this single phrase a wallet can deterministically regenerate all of its private keys and addresses, which is why restoring a wallet on a new device only requires re-entering the words in order.
Why it matters
The seed phrase is the master backup. Anyone who has it can rebuild the entire wallet on their own device and move the funds, and there is no way to change it the way you would reset a password. Because it controls everything at once, it is the single most valuable secret a self-custody user holds, and the primary target of scams.
Common misunderstanding
A frequent error is treating the phrase like a password to be typed into apps or websites when prompted. It should almost never be entered anywhere after the initial setup or a genuine restore. Real wallets do not ask you to “verify” or “revalidate” your phrase through a web form, a support chat, or a pop-up, and hardware wallets keep it entirely offline by design. Storing it as a screenshot, in cloud notes, or in email exposes it to anyone who breaches those accounts.
