Definition
Phishing is a social-engineering attack that impersonates a trusted party to trick you into revealing secrets or signing harmful transactions.
Phishing is deception that impersonates someone or something you trust, such as a wallet provider, an exchange, a project team, or support staff, to make you take a harmful action. In crypto this usually means one of two goals: getting you to reveal a seed phrase or private key, or getting you to sign a malicious approval or transaction, often via a wallet drainer. The attack targets the person, not the cryptography.
Why it matters
Phishing is among the most common causes of crypto loss precisely because it bypasses technical defences. Common channels include fake login or wallet pages, lookalike domains, fraudulent “support” agents in chat apps, malicious search ads, fake airdrop announcements, and direct messages that create urgency (“your funds are at risk, verify now”). Because a phished action is one the victim performs, the resulting transaction is valid and typically irreversible.
Common misunderstanding
Many assume phishing only means fake emails, or that they are too experienced to be fooled. Modern crypto phishing is highly targeted and often visually perfect, and it increasingly relies on getting a single signature rather than an obvious password. The reliable defences are behavioural: never enter a seed phrase into any website; reach sites through bookmarks rather than links or ads; verify domains carefully; treat urgency as a red flag; and confirm unexpected “support” contact through official channels, since legitimate staff never ask for your recovery phrase. When in doubt, stop and verify independently through an official channel before taking any action.
